Short Circuit Studies

The SC study is performed to determine the maximum duty that the system protective devices, transformers, and interconnections will be subjected to, in event of three phase and /or line – ground fault conditions. It is required for evaluating the fuses and breakers interrupting capability against the system available fault current.

It is also used to evaluate the withstanding design capability of all the electrical equipment (panels, switchboards, switchgears, MCCs, Motor starters, and other electrical equipment not mentioned) used in the system, against the available fault currents.

The fault study provides the basic information required for determining the protective device settings, relays, and breakers (when the study is extended to the 480V and lower voltages) for the down stream main, feeder, branches and motor circuits.
